Companies usually decide to hire dedicated developers India-side for one of three reasons: local hiring is too slow, the roadmap is bigger than the team, or a specialist skill is needed for a year rather than for ever. The model works well when it is set up properly and badly when it is treated as cheap freelancing. This guide explains the engagement models, what you are really paying for each month, what to put in the contract, and how to run the first ninety days so the developer becomes part of your team.
What it means to hire dedicated developers in India
A dedicated developer is employed by a vendor but works only for you, full time, inside your tools and your sprint. You set the priorities. The vendor handles recruitment, payroll, equipment, office, leave cover and replacement. That is different from a project, where the vendor owns delivery, and from a freelancer, who usually juggles several clients.
| Model | Who directs the work | You pay for | Works best when | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated developer | You | A monthly fee per person | You have a technical lead and a steady backlog | Weak direction from your side wastes the capacity |
| Dedicated development team | You, with a vendor-side lead | A monthly fee for the team | You need several roles at once, such as backend, frontend and QA | Paying for roles you do not fully use |
| Fixed-price project | The vendor | An agreed price for an agreed scope | Requirements are clear and stable | Change requests when requirements move |
| Freelancer | You | Hourly or per task | Small, self-contained pieces of work | Availability and continuity |
If you cannot yet describe the work in a backlog, start with a small fixed-scope project. If you can, and the work will run for six months or more, a dedicated arrangement is usually better value.
What the monthly fee covers
Buyers often compare the vendor's monthly rate with a salary figure they found online and conclude the margin is high. The comparison misses most of the cost. A typical fee includes:
- The developer's salary and statutory benefits.
- Recruitment and screening, including the candidates you never saw.
- Laptop, software licences, office space and connectivity.
- HR, payroll, leave management and retention.
- A replacement if the developer leaves or does not work out.
- Sometimes a share of a delivery manager or technical lead.
Ask each vendor to state which of these are included. Two quotes that differ by a third may be identical once you add what the cheaper one leaves out.
Offshore developers India cost: budgeting ranges
The figures below are planning estimates for a full-time dedicated developer hired through an agency in India. They are not a quote from us or from anyone else, and real proposals will fall outside these bands in both directions. Use them only to check whether your budget is in the right region.
| Profile | Estimated monthly fee (INR) | What pushes it up |
|---|---|---|
| Junior developer, common web stack | ₹70,000 to ₹1.3 lakh | Metro location, strong English, short contract |
| Mid-level developer | ₹1.3 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh | Scarce framework, product experience, overlap hours |
| Senior developer or technical lead | ₹2.5 lakh to ₹4.5 lakh | Architecture ownership, client-facing role |
| Specialist such as AI, ML or DevOps | ₹3 lakh to ₹6 lakh | Production experience with LLMs, cloud certifications, security clearance needs |
Five things move a quote more than anything else: years of relevant experience, how scarce the skill is, contract length, the working-hours overlap you require, and how much management the vendor provides. A twelve-month commitment for a common stack will sit near the bottom of a band. A three-month contract for a rare skill with late-evening hours will sit above it.
Costs that do not appear on the invoice
- Your own time. Someone on your side must write tickets, review code and answer questions every day. Without that, even a strong developer drifts.
- Onboarding. Expect reduced output in the first few weeks while the developer learns your codebase.
- Tooling and access. Extra seats on your repository, project tracker, cloud accounts and communication tools.
- Turnover. A replacement guarantee covers the hiring, not the knowledge that walks out. Good documentation is your insurance.
A contract checklist
- Intellectual property in all work passes to you on payment.
- NDA and confidentiality signed by both the vendor and the individual developer.
- Working hours and the daily overlap window, stated in your time zone.
- Notice period for ending the engagement or reducing the team.
- Replacement terms: how quickly, and whether handover time is free.
- Security: device policy, access control, and what happens to access on exit.
- Leave and public holidays, and whether cover is provided.
- A non-solicitation clause that is fair to both sides.
The first ninety days
Days 1 to 30: access and small wins
Give repository, tracker and environment access on day one. Assign small, real tickets that touch different parts of the system. Hold a short daily call. Judge communication and code quality, not speed.
Days 31 to 60: ownership
Hand over a feature or a module end to end. Include the developer in planning and reviews. By now questions should be fewer and more specific.
Days 61 to 90: review
Compare output with what you expected at the start. If it is not working, use the replacement clause now. Waiting six months to act is the most expensive mistake in this model.
Warning signs when you hire remote developers in India
- The vendor will not let you interview the actual developer.
- The CV you approved and the person who joins are not the same.
- One developer appears to be working across several clients.
- No written replacement or notice terms.
- Rates far below every other quote, with no explanation of what is excluded.

Frequently asked questions
Is a dedicated development team in India better than hiring locally?
It is faster to start and usually costs less per person, but it needs clear direction from your side. Companies with a technical lead and a defined backlog get the most from it. Companies without either should begin with a managed project.
How quickly can a dedicated developer start?
It depends on the skill. Staff augmentation is generally much faster than a full-time hiring cycle, especially for common stacks. Scarce skills take longer to match.
Who owns the code a dedicated developer writes?
You should. Make sure the contract assigns all intellectual property to you and that the code lives in your own repository from the first day.
Can I scale the team up or down?
Yes, within the notice terms of the contract. Agree those terms before you start, including whether the engagement can later be converted to a different arrangement.
